Stewart's Coffee
Stewart’s Coffee was founded in 1956 by the late T.A. Stewart, establishing the first coffee house in Dunedin and the only one in New Zealand at the time to roast its own beans on-site. From day one, Stewart’s has used two of New Zealand’s oldest Probat roasters, relying on traditional belts, burners, and craftsmanship to produce some of the country’s finest coffee.
In 1975, Stewart’s was sold with the vision of expanding its roasting capabilities and supplying high-quality coffee nationwide. By 1979, Stewart’s Coffee Supplies Ltd was founded, and a dedicated roasting facility was established on Grange Street, Dunedin. The original coffee house in the Octagon continued to serve locals until November 1998, when it closed as the café scene evolved. A retail shop on Filluel Street remained open, keeping Stewart’s coffee accessible to the public.
In 2011, Stewart’s Coffee relocated from Dunedin to Christchurch, taking advantage of a more central location. A new roastery and café were set up at 595 Halswell Junction Road, Hornby, where Stewart’s continues to operate as its headquarters today. By 2014, the last Dunedin storefront on Filluel Street closed, consolidating all production, sales, and operations in Christchurch.
Today, Stewart’s Coffee remains committed to crafting quality, locally roasted coffee, maintaining the same dedication to excellence that began in 1956.

Dessford Tea
Dessford Tea was established in the 1970s, originally produced alongside Stewart’s Coffee in Dunedin. While we’ve grown over the years, we remain true to our origins. Our tea is sourced directly from growers in Sri Lanka, ensuring we receive only the finest hand-picked leaves. Carefully dried and bundled using traditional methods, our tea embarks on its journey to our production centre and roastery in Christchurch.
Once in Christchurch, we meticulously craft a range of products, including boxed loose tea and tea bags, all of which are hand-packaged in-house. From sorting and weighing to packaging and labelling, every step is handled with care to maintain the highest quality standards before being shipped across New Zealand.
As one of the first in the industry, we take pride in remaining Kiwi-owned and operated. Our commitment to quality is reflected in the time and dedication we invest daily into every product we produce.
You can find Dessford Tea in cafés, restaurants, and retail stores, including Farmlands, supermarkets, and Bin Inn. We also continue to serve loyal customers who have been brewing Dessford Tea since the beginning, ensuring they enjoy the same great taste with every cup.
